Why do people still love the NLT after 30 years?
Some gifts arrive in a box. This one arrived in a box and then quietly opened something in me.
The moment I slid the NLT Large Print Premium Value Thinline Bible out of its sleeve, I ran my fingers across the embossed garden of roses, daisies, and wildflowers on the Garden Pink LeatherLike cover. As someone who loves to get her hands in the soil, I smiled. It felt like a Bible made for a woman who tends things: her home, her family, her community, her faith.
But a pretty cover only gets you to open a Bible. What keeps you reading is whether the words reach you. After 30 years, that is exactly why the New Living Translation is still so loved.
Is the NLT a paraphrase or a real translation?
This is the question I hear most, so let me clear it up. The NLT is not a paraphrase. It is a true translation created by a team of more than 100 biblical scholars who worked directly from the earliest and most reliable Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek manuscripts.
What makes it special is the intention behind every sentence. The scholars used just the words needed to carry the original meaning, nothing more and nothing less. The result is Scripture that is faithful to the ancient text and still sounds like real people talking. As someone who designs training for a living, I appreciate that kind of clarity. Good communication removes barriers so the message can land. The NLT does that with God's Word.
What is the Life Application Life Topics Index, and why does it matter?

This is my favorite feature, and I did not expect it to be.
The exclusive Life Application Life Topics Index sits in the back of the Bible and is organized by the real things we walk through: gentleness, giving, godliness, gifts, and so many more. Each topic opens with a key verse, a short sentence that explains why it matters, and a list of related passages so you can keep going deeper.
One evening I turned to the entry for God. It begins with Psalm 42, that beautiful picture of a deer longing for streams of water, and then James 4:8: "Come close to God, and God will come close to you." Underneath was a simple reminder that we were made with an emptiness only God can fill. Then came a list I sat with for a long time: God is trustworthy, gracious, good, near, personal, and love, each with a reference to look up.
I did not need a commentary or a study guide open beside me. The index met me right where I was. When you are hurting, celebrating, confused, or simply curious, you can flip to a topic and find a path through Scripture in minutes. For anyone who has ever said, "I want to read the Bible, but I don't know where to start," this is your starting place.
In the work I do mentoring women and teens, this is the kind of tool I want to put in their hands. It makes the Bible feel less like a closed book and more like a conversation.
Is the NLT Large Print Thinline easy to read?

Yes, and my eyes are grateful. The large print 10.25 point type is crisp and comfortable, yet the Thinline design keeps the Bible slim enough to carry in my tote to church, to work, or to Bible study.
A few details I noticed right away:
Lay flat Smyth sewn binding. The pages stay open on their own, which is perfect for taking notes or reading while I sip my evening tea.
Clean, simple layout. The contents page is easy to scan, so finding a book is quick even for a new reader.
Readable language. The meaning hits you right away. I have read familiar passages for years, and in the NLT some of them felt brand new.
Does the NLT sound good read aloud?
It really does. Read a Psalm out loud in the NLT and you will hear how naturally it flows. That makes it a wonderful choice for memorizing verses, preaching, teaching, family devotions, and public reading. As a voiceover artist, I listen for rhythm and clarity in every script, and this translation has both.
Is this Bible a good value?
